Seattle,
Apr. 13, 1997
By MATT
(mlb@zipcon.net)
Nine friends
and I arrived at the Mercer Arena in downtown Seattle at about
7:25 p.m. As we walked in, Handsome began playing. Everyone
loved them and they got the pit started early. I heard many
people say that they were going to get the Handsome CD.
After
Handsome finished, there was a 30-minute pause for equipment
setup before Local H came out. When they played all of their
songs, they announced that silverchair would be out shortly
and the crowd erupted. The stage crew began setting up the
Freak Show stage backdrop, which now features heat coils like
the ones in the Freak video instead of the circus sideshow
freaks as it had in the past.
It took
about 50 minutes to setup the stage before silverchair came
out. Here's the setlist in order:
Slave
Roses
Findaway
Abuse Me
Pure Massacre
Cemetery
Suicidal Dream
Tomorrow
The Door
Faultline
No Association
Freak
Madman
Encore:
The Closing
Israel's Son
There
were two things I noticed immediately: one was that Daniel
looked as if he was going to fall asleep at the beginning
of the show. The other was that the drums had so much power
to them. They sounded so much better than the first two bands.
Daniel talked to the crowd more than at any show I've seen
or read about in reviews. On one occasion, he spoke for about
three minutes straight. Unfortunately, I couldn't understand
a single word because the volume was so loud and because of
his accent. I remember the last thing he said, and it was
"Oh, ha ha ha, this girl just showed me her boobs and
asked me how they look!"
Before
Abuse Me, Daniel said, "We've got another guitarist for
this song. He used to play for Black Sabbath. He's also our
sexual guidance counselor, and he shows us all the various
methods of masturbation. This song has been played on the
radio sometimes." After about the fourth song, Daniel
said it would be the last song of the night and everyone got
pissed and he said, "No, no! Just kidding!"
Other
quotes that I remember:
- "You
guys rock the house, and yeah, that's all I've got to say."
- "I
don't really have much to say except an occasional thank
you every now and then."
- "Last
time I played here, no, it wasn't here, yeah, there was
this, no that wasn't here, sorry guys."
Some things
about the music were different too. The first five songs sounded
about the same as last time I heard them live, but Cemetery
was improvised a bit. Daniel sang it differently and added
in some guitar parts at the end. The Tomorrow guitar solo
has changed a lot too -- it's longer and it has been changed
dramatically -- it's basically a new solo.
The Door
was a definite highlight and Daniel improvised the guitar
parts, not a lot, but he played the main part with vibrato
the whole time. They extended the ending part of Faultline
a lot. In Madman there was a guitar solo -- I've never heard
one in that song before. It looked like he was going to solo
more, but it seemed like he messed up and cut back into the
normal rhythm part of the song.
After
Madman, the band left the stage, someone came out and adjusted
Ben's drum set and Bailey Holloway, silverchair's stage crew
chief, came out and tuned Daniel's silver PRS guitar. The
crowd chanted "SIL-VER-CHAIR! SIL-VER-CHAIR" for
about five minutes and then everyone stopped. People were
asking others if the show was over, then others started booing.
I knew it wasn't over so I wasn't worried. Finally, they came
back out and began playing The Closing. The pit was as heavy
as it had been in The Door and Madman. I had never heard The
Closing live. It kicked ass, but the only disappointment of
the night was during this song, when they stopped and Chris'
bass line came in and the song started rocking. Daniel didn't
sing the lyrics "Me and shame are the same, me and shame
take the blame. Me and pain are the same, me and shame take
the blame." The Closing still rocked -- it was one of
the best songs of the night -- but the best vocal part of
the song wasn't sung.
Next was
Israel's Son which Daniel played with his silver PRS, not
that that's a big thing, it just that he has always played
it with his green PRS. The pit was crazy; I saw one guy go
out with blood all over his face, and another guy had a broken
leg. I don't know how they got him out, but as soon as he
got out, he couldn't walk any more and he collapsed on the
floor.
At the
end of Israel's Son, Daniel threw his guitar in the air and
caught it by the fretboard. He didn't bash the cymbals with
his guitar as he sometimes does, and he didn't stay out on
the stage making all those weird effects like he usually does.
All three members left at the same time. Ben threw his drumsticks
to the crowd, Daniel climbed up on his amps and laid on them
for a second, then went over to the other side of the amp
and left the stage.
One other
note: Flea and Anthony Kiedis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers
were there. They walked through the crowd about halfway through
the show and went backstage immediately. Not many people noticed
them. |

Five friends and
I arrived in Seattle at about 11:00 a.m. to spend the day
there. We decided to go to the Mercer Arena first to see what
was happening there. We chatted with the security guards who
informed us that the bands had not arrived yet except for
Local H. We chatted with the guards for a bit, waited some
more and much later, Bailey Holloway arrived (silverchair's
stage crew chief and second guitarist on the live version
of Abuse Me). He was extremely nice and was cool about talking
to us.
After going inside,
we found some good seats, since last time I saw this band,
I was up in front of the pit and don't remember much of the
show. As I was wandering around the arena, I spotted Bailey
again. I said hi, we talked very briefly, but he seemed busy,
so I let him go.
My friend Vicky
was off wandering around while we were saving our seats, but
she came back and waved for us to come quickly. We followed
her to the hallway, and standing in the hallway was a very
bald Ben. He was talking to a radio interviewer and we waited
for him to finish. When they were done, someone commented
on his new 'do. I told him it made me laugh. He told me to
shut up. I laughed. Then he asked me why it made me laugh,
and I told him it was just because I wasn't used to it. We
talked to Ben for a bit and got his autograph, but then too
many people were noticing him, so we left, and went back to
our seats.
Handsome started
soon thereafter, and since two of my friends had purchased
their CD a while ago, I was very familiar with the songs.
I liked Handsome's performance a lot. They are a very good
band.
After Local H and
some time for stage setup, silverchair came out to the ever
familiar circus tune. They started right into Slave, with
the now-trademark pauses between each of the first sets of
chords.
Daniel didn't say
much but thank you a few times until a little more than halfway
through the set. His comments included "You guys are
rockin' the house." And after some chick apparently showed
him (and everyone else) her boobs, he said, "Some girl
just showed me her boobs and asked me how they look -- they
look pretty good!" I laughed. And before they played
Abuse Me, he introduced Bailey as a former member of Black
Sabbath and said, "He is also our sexual guidance counselor,
he helps us masturbate." This comment came as no surprise
to me.
Before Cemetery,
he informed everyone that he would be doing the song by himself.
Before The Door, he said it was going to be their last song.
People got mad, so he said he was just kidding. Before No
Association, he apologized for not saying much all night and
then started talking for about three minutes. He was talking
about things like feedback, and hums. I think it was along
the lines of "We've got feedback," then he'd play
his highest string, and let us hear it and said "See,
did you hear it?" Then he said "We have adopted
a hum (talking about the feedback), it's our new pet, it follows
us wherever we go." It was funny. I don't think many
people caught that one.
The whole time,
I was going as wild as I could while being in a seat. And
when Madman came on, I got even crazier, and had to force
myself to go into the pit (OK, I wanted to go). I came back
out when the song was over and sat down. silverchair had left
the stage, but I didn't worry, I knew they would be back.
Everyone was getting restless, and people started chanting
"sil-ver-chair SIL-VER-CHAIR!" I would've joined,
but I was so tired I could barely move. So they came back
out after about five minutes and were greeted by the crowd
with cheers and screams from the teenies who somehow managed
to survive all of the people wanting to kill them all night.
The 'chair broke into The Closing, and then Israel's Son for
the encore. Both were quite good, but The Closing was a bit
different than on the album. They didn't do their usual stunts
at the end of Israel's Son and Daniel used his silver PRS
instead of his green Page Hamilton PRS. Instead, Daniel threw
his silver PRS in the air and caught it at the top of the
fretboard, then dropped it to the ground before weakly jumping
on top of the amps. He laid there for a second or two, then
went down the other side and left the stage. Chris and Ben
left at the same time -- there was no stage diving, no crashing
into the drum kit -- they just left. So we all filed out of
the Mercer Arena and went to the car.

by KATHLEEN THOMAS (SEThomas4@aol.com)
I saw silverchair
for the second time, on Sunday, April 13. My two other friends
and I, came early about 2:30, but the silverchair bus was
already there. We waited forever for them to finish their
soundcheck, and when they did we saw them walk by to the bus
to have dinner with the winners of a local radio contest.
My friend knew one of these people. Ben's head looks better
to me, and I'm sure he's happy that he doesn't have to mess
with it while drumming.
We decided to not
go inside until the band did, so we waited and they came by
so I got some pictures, although I hope they will turn out.
We then went inside, sat down on the ground, and talked to
the people we knew that hung out with silverchair. They said
they didn't really get to talk to them much because for a
awhile they went to the back of the bus. One of the girls
was talking about how cool Daniel's eyes are and stuff like
that. I thought the first band Handsome sorta sucked, they
were way too loud and my eardrums were about to explode. I
liked Local H though they were really cool, and had so much
talent.
silverchair took
forever to start like the last time they were in Seattle;
they came out with the same circus music, but didn't have
that backdrop they had heat coils in the background like the
ones in the Freak video. The started off the set with Slave,
which had the long pauses in the beginning, then Roses. The
others I'm not sure of the order.
Findaway
Pure Massacre
Abuse Me
Cemetery
Madman
The Door
No Association
Tomorrow
Freak
Encore:
The Closing
Israel's Son
Some things Daniel
said that I can remember were, before the Door, he said something
like "we bring the hum from the microphone wherever we
go, the song is about the friend of the hum"
During the show
some chick showed Daniel her boobs and asked them what they
look like. He said to the crowd "(laughing) There is
a girl showing me her boobs and asking what they look like,
ah they look great...stop sending me messages."
Before Abuse Me,
Daniel said about the other guy playing guitar, "He's
our sexual guidance counselor, he shows us various ways the
masturbate"
All in all it was
a blast.
