Silverchair Update

December 26, 1995

In 1995, Silverchair went from a bunch of high school buddies playing music in their bedrooms to a bunch of high school buddies playing music all over the world. Their album frogstomp, and particularly their first single Tomorrow, made them the most popular band in their home country of Australia and led to tours of Europe, North America and the Far East. At the Ninth Annual Australian Record Industry Awards, the band won honors for Best Australian Single, Best Australian Debut Single and Highest Selling Australian Single for Tomorrow, Best Australian Debut Album for frogstomp, and Best Australian New Talent. Two months later, singer/guitarist Daniel Johns and drummer Ben Gillies won the Songwriter of the Year Award at the 1995 APRA Songwriter's Awards. They played the Reading festival and Saturday Night Live and were on the cover of a dozen music magazines. They're currently touring North America again. Not bad for guys who didn't start playing their instruments until four years ago.
