Before leaving their native Australia for their current U.S. tour, silverchair singer/guitarist Daniel Johns and drummer Ben Gillies won the Songwriter of the Year Award at the 1995 APRA Songwriter Awards. The award is given each November by the Australian Performing Rights Association. Upon arriving in the states, silverchair made their U.S. national television debut Dec. 9 on Saturday Night Live. They did the song that first brought them attention, Tomorrow, and their new single, Pure Massacre. Stops along their tour include radio station-sponsored benefits such as the 6th Annual KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas in Los Angeles and the Q101/Chicago Twisted Christmas 2. The KROQ series benefits the L.A. Countywide Coalition to End Homelessness. The Q101 show benefits Contact Chicago and Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide, both local Illinois suicide prevention charities. Besides helping good causes, both shows have great lineups, in addition to silverchair.
